NDP Statement on Bike to Work Day in Canada: #CycleLife

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made the following statement:

“It’s no secret that I love to cycle. In fact, I believe that it’s time for Canada to have a national cycling strategy that works to advance cycle infrastructure, safety and accessibility in cities and regions across Canada.

Cycling is a sustainable transportation solution that is low cost, environmentally friendly, and encourages healthy living. It’s also a fun way to meet new friends and explore your community.

As I travel across Canada and meet people in communities from coast to coast to coast, I always try to get on a bike, check out the cycle infrastructure, and meet other cyclists and pedestrians along the way.

The truth is, Canada can do so much more to improve and expand our cycling infrastructure – In fact, we unfortunately lag behind many OECD countries where national cycling strategies have been adopted to encourage healthier communities.

It’s also clear from countries such as Germany, Norway and the UK, that a concerted effort from government to implement a national cycling strategy are effective and lead to more livable communities.

That’s why I’m so proud of the work of my colleague, Gord Johns, MP for Courtenay – Alberni, and his tireless work in calling for the establishment of Canada’s first National Cycling Strategy.

So today, on National Bike to Work Day, and with June being Bike Month in Canada, I want to thank cycling advocates across Canada for all their work in making our communities more livable and cycle friendly. New Democrats are committed to building a Canada that is a world leader in sustainable transportation solutions, and where #CycleLife is for everyone.”
