NDP statement on Lincoln Alexander Day

NDP MPs David Christopherson (Hamilton Centre) and Scott Duvall (Hamilton Mountain) made the following statement on Lincoln Alexander Day:

“Today, we join Canadians in paying tribute to the Honourable Lincoln Alexander – Canada’s first black federal Cabinet Minister and Ontario’s first black Lieutenant Governor.

One of Canada’s most groundbreaking and influential leaders, Mr. Alexander served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War after which he established a successful legal practice in Hamilton. He was also the longest-serving chancellor of the University of Guelph and a recipient of the Companion of the Order of Canada – one of the country’s highest honours.

New Democrats are proud to have spearheaded the initiative to designate January 21 Lincoln Alexander Day. His sense of purpose and accomplishments will inspire Canadians for generations to come.”
