NDP statement on International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances

Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s NDP, issued the following statement:

“Around the world, too many people live their day-to-day lives in fear of being abducted, detained, or arrested and held in poor conditions, without legal representation, and without their whereabouts being known to their loved ones.

These enforced disappearances, often of human rights workers or citizens opposing military dictatorships, are widely used as a strategy of intimidation and political repression, resulting in the spread of fear within a society, while the perpetrators of these acts go unpunished.

Reports of harassment, ill-treatment, and intimidation of witnesses of these enforced disappearances are also growing, leading to worldwide concern.

On this day, New Democrats remember the disappeared and stand in solidarity with them and their families, as they struggle for justice and the enforcement of their human rights.”
