NDP Statement on International Day of Democracy

Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s NDP, issued the following statement:

“Today is the International Day of Democracy – a day to recognize the principles of democracy around the world.

We all have a responsibility to protect our democracy, and to strengthen it – something that should be top of mind for people across the country right now.

In Toronto, Doug Ford is overriding the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in an effort to make it harder for Torontonians to be represented by their local government.

It’s an extreme decision that’s a symptom of a larger problem: Canadians were promised changes to our electoral system – changes that would have made our democracy stronger – but the Liberal government has failed to deliver on that promise.

Today, we recommit to standing up for democratic principles around the world and here at home. New Democrats will keep standing up for a better voting system, defending human rights, and working to build a Canada where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.”
