NDP Statement on the International Day against Nuclear Tests

Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s NDP, issued the following statement:

“ A single nuclear warhead can kill millions of people, with long-term and irreversible effects on human and animal health, the environment, climate and food production.

But the Liberal government has refused to sign the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, and has abstained from being part of the process – rather than taking a leadership role to protect Canadians and people around the world.

The NDP has long opposed nuclear weapons, and we believe in the need to actively work towards ensuring that nuclear weapons are never used again. We stand by the efforts of groups across Canada, including the Canadian Network to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, who are devoted to this campaign.

Today on the International Day against Nuclear Tests, we recognize the human and environmental tragedies that result from nuclear testing – and commit to supporting all efforts to eliminate nuclear testing and the use of nuclear weapons.”
