NDP Statement on Firefighters’ National Memorial Day

Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s NDP, issued the following statement:

“While most people will run out of their home when there’s a fire, firefighters run directly into it, with full knowledge of the many dangers that await them. And when tragedy strikes – as it has more than 1300 times in Canada since 1848 – all Canadians grieve with the fallen firefighter’s family, friends, and colleagues.

Canadians everywhere recognize the brave and selfless service of their firefighters. On this Firefighters’ National Memorial Day, let us take a moment to honour this service, as well as the sacrifice of those who have answered their last alarm in the line of duty. Their generous commitment to saving lives at the loss of their own is solemnly remembered on this day.

New Democrats also remember and thank all the firefighters who are fighting the 2018 summer wildfires in Canada, especially in British Columbia and Northern Ontario. Their bravery and commitment to Canada are making a difference to all those who live and work in these danger zones.

To become a firefighter is to choose a life filled with risk-taking and physical dangers, and with emotional and mental stress. In their honour, let’s commit to making sure Canada remains a country where people, like our firefighters, continue to generously look out for their neighbours and communities.”
