NDP Statement on Eid-al-Fitr

NDP Multiculturalism Critic Jenny Kwan (Vancouver East) made the following statement on the Eid al-Fitr:

"On behalf of New Democrats, I would like to extend my best wishes to all Muslims in Canada celebrating Eid al-Fitr to mark the end of the holy month Ramadan.

Eid al-Fitr is a special time for family and friends as they come together in the spirit of unity, forgiveness and charity. Following a month of fasting and spiritual reflection, it’s a time to celebrate our diversity and shared commitment to social justice.

At the end of this month of reflection, we also think of Muslims who have been displaced or affected by conflict and were apart from family during Ramadan. Our thoughts are with them and their loved ones at this time.

Canada is deeply enriched by the contributions of the Muslim community. As New Democrats, we recommit ourselves to defending human rights in Canada and around the world and to fighting against racism and Islamophobia.

Canada must also continue to welcome refugees fleeing violent conflict zones like Syria, and Canadians must work together to build a more inclusive country and a more peaceful world.

Today, Muslims are uniting in a renewal of faith, gratitude, and optimism for the future. Canadian society is stronger because of the generosity, commitment and compassion of the Muslim community.

To everyone observing Eid al-Fitr, we wish you a wonderful celebration. Eid Mubarak!"
