NDP Statement on the Day of Pink

Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s NDP, issued the following statement today on the Day of Pink:

In 2007, a student in Nova Scotia wore a pink shirt on his first day of school. And like too many kids across Canada, and worldwide, he faced hateful homophobic bullying.

What makes this story different is what happened next.

His fellow students decided to support him and stand up against bullying by all coming together to wear pink shirts.

Today, 11 years later, because of the courage of that young man and the compassionate activism of his peers, people all over the world wear pink in a show of solidarity to end bullying, homophobia and transphobia.

Growing up with long hair, brown skin and a funny-sounding name, I faced some bullying myself.

It makes you feel like you don’t belong – like there is something wrong with you just for being you.

Nobody should have to feel that way.

That’s why I’m proud to wear pink today in solidarity with the young Canadians who are showing us all the way forward.

Together, we can eliminate bullying, homophobia, transphobia and all forms of hate.

With love and courage, we can build a better Canada and a better world, where everyone is celebrated because of who they are, and where no one is left behind.
