NDP Statement on Davie Shipyard Contract

NDP Parliamentary Leader Guy Caron made the following statement:

“It was about time that the Davie Shipyard workers heard some good news, even if it wasn’t quite what they were hoping for. Since last fall, we have been asking the government to award the shipyard a contract and protect the jobs of Davie workers.

The contract awarded today will give them a much needed break, and allow the shipyard to remain open, but the 200 or so jobs it will create don’t even come close to the 800 jobs that Davie was hoping for. We have always supported Davie Shipyard and its workers, and we will continue to fight for them. This announcement by the Liberals is not enough and we can do better.

The Coast Guard urgently needs ships and at the rate federal contracts are being awarded, people’s safety could be at stake. Let’s be clear, it is not a quality workforce or shipyard expertise that is missing.”
