NDP statement on conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh

The following statement was issued today by NDP Foreign Affairs Critic Hélène Laverdière (Laurier—Sainte-Marie):

“This weekend’s clashes in Nagorno-Karabakh are profoundly alarming and represent the most serious escalation of this conflict in more than 20 years.

“We condemn violations of the 1994 ceasefire and the violence which has led to tragic civilian casualties on both sides. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those killed and call for an immediate renewal of the ceasefire in order to halt the loss of life and stabilise the situation on the ground.

“We recall recent steps in the Minsk Group process led by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), where last December the President of the Republic of Armenia and the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan reaffirmed their commitment to a negotiation process and their readiness to continue engaging with settlement proposals.

“New Democrats call on the government of Canada to stand ready to assist in achieving a ceasefire and a durable, peaceful resolution to this conflict.”
