NDP statement on Canada's assistance to Vanuatu

NDP development critic Hélène Laverdière (Laurier—Sainte-Marie) made the following statement regarding Canada's assistance to Vanuatu:

"On behalf of New Democrats, I express our condolences to the people of Vanuatu following Cyclone Pam.

"The extent of the devastation is only beginning to emerge. Humanitarian needs are extensive and will require long-term commitment from the international community as Vanuatu begins to rebuild. We commend the life-saving work of humanitarian relief organizations on the ground in Vanuatu.

"Canada must do more to support these efforts by contributing our fair share to the global effort to help Vanuatu rebuild. While we welcome the funding announcement by Minister Paradis, we note that Canada's current level of contribution is far below what it should be.

"During last week's UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, the links between climate change and natural disasters was a major subject of discussion. Canada must assume its international responsibilities with regard to reducing carbon emissions and by helping to mitigate and build resilience to the effects of climate change in the developing world. In the months leading up to international meetings on the Sustainable Development Goals, and the 2015 Climate Change Conference in Paris, Canada must play a stronger role in ensuring ambitious and effective agreements."
