NDP Statement on Black History Month

New Democrat Multiculturalism critic Rachel Blaney made the following statement on Black History Month:

This Black History Month, New Democrats join Canadians in honouring the legacy of black Canadians, past and present. Despite their many achievements and contributions to our society, black Canadians are often missing from our history books and their sacrifices not well known or recognized.

Black History Month – officially recognized since 1995 – is a chance for Canadians to gain insight into the experiences of black Canadians and their vital role in making Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate and prosperous nation it is today.

Although progress has been made in the fight against prejudice, discrimination and inequality, there is much more to do. As the progressive opposition, we will continue our efforts to build a more just and equal country for all.
