NDP statement on the beginning of Ramadan

New Democrat Leader Tom Mulcair made the following statement:

“On behalf of all New Democrats, I would like to offer my best wishes to all Muslims here in Canada and around the world who are celebrating the holy month of Ramadan.

This month-long observance is dedicated to prayer, fasting, personal reflection, compassion, good deeds, and celebrating with family and friends.

Canada is deeply enriched by the contributions of the Muslim community and Muslim people.

As New Democrats offer our best wishes for Ramadan, we recommit ourselves to defending human rights in Canada and around the world and to fighting against racism and Islamophobia.

During this month of reflection, we also think of Muslims who have been displaced or affected by conflict and may be apart from family during Ramadan. Canada must continue to welcome refugees fleeing violent conflict zones like Syria, and we must work together to build a fairer, more inclusive country and a more peaceful world.
