NDP Statement on 70 Years of UN Peacekeeping Service and Sacrifice

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made the following statement:

“I am proud of Canada’s contribution to UN peacekeeping. More than 125,000 Canadians – military, police, and civilian – have served in close to 50 UN missions around the world.

Over the past seven decades, our peacekeepers have proudly served in countless countries, from Cyprus to Lebanon, to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Somalia; missions that have impacted the lives of hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

As the United Nations celebrates the 70th anniversary of UN peacekeeping, let’s take a moment to pay tribute to the sacrifices made by all UN personnel working in countries torn apart by conflict. Their courage is remembered today, as are the 130 Canadians who have tragically lost their lives on peacekeeping missions.

Peacekeeping requires global partnerships to succeed. Let us pledge to do all we can to ensure that peacekeeping missions succeed in the face of increasingly complex and dangerous theatres of operation, and let us continue to invest in global peace, security and prosperity.”
