NDP statement on the 375th anniversary of Montréal

NDP leader Tom Mulcair made the following statement:

“As a Montrealer, I am so proud to celebrate the 375^th anniversary of our great city.

Our history is storied and our culture is rich. Montréal is the fourth largest Francophone city in the world. The island is also the birthplace and home of world-renowned artists, musicians, athletes and scholars.

We are intensely proud of our entrepreneurial successes and cultural institutions that are recognized for their excellence around the world.

Montréal is also a global city in every sense, uniquely liveable, culturally diverse, and home to world-class universities in both official languages.

While we celebrate the birth of our city, founded on the banks of the St. Lawrence River by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve and Jeanne Mance 375 years ago, we also honour the traditional territory of the Indigenous Peoples who were the first to live here.

Montréal was a meeting place for Indigenous nations, and today, in many ways it represents a meeting place of culture and diversity in our country.

I am so proud to be a Montrealer and to represent Montrealers in the House of Commons.
