NDP statement on the 32nd anniversary of the invasion of the Golden Temple

NDP Leader Tom Mulcair issued the following statement on the 32nd anniversary of the Golden Temple Invasion:

"Today marks the 32nd anniversary of the invasion of the Darbar Sahib, or Golden Temple. I extend my sincerest sympathies to the loved ones of all those who lost their lives in this horrific massacre.

The brutality visited upon dozens of Gurdwaras in Punjab in June of 1984 has left deep scars decades later. The pain and desire for justice still echo through the Sikh community in India and around the world today.

The New Democratic Party has stood and will continue to stand with the Sikh community, human rights organizations and people of conscience around the world in calling for a full rendering of accounts of the events that occurred during these tragic days. Faced with such a profound loss of innocent lives, it is the obligation of the international community to seek answers and justice.

As we remember those killed in the massacres of 1984, let Canada re-commit to truth-seeking, healing and reconciliation, and to the protection of democracy and human rights around the world."
