NDP Statement on the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge

NDP Veterans Affairs Critic Irene Mathyssen made the following statement on the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge:

“Today marks the 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge, the First World War battle whose outcome helped shape the identity of our nation. Vimy echoes in the collective memory of all Canadians as we reflect today on all those who gave of their lives and livelihood to defend our country.

Approximately 100,000 Canadian soldiers participated in the battle, and fought valiantly to capture the ridge, marking a strategic turning point for the Allies in the war. Almost 4,000 Canadians lost their lives and 7,000 were injured. The battle left scars that can never be healed, and should never be forgotten.

Today, New Democrats honour the soldiers and their families who served our country at Vimy Ridge, and acknowledge the sacrifices they made for a more peaceful future. We also pay our respects to each and every veteran and serving member of the Canadian Forces. It is a time to reflect on the values we call upon our sons and daughters in the military to protect.”
