NDP REALITY CHECK: Conservatives play politics on war crimes

Back in October, when the NDP called for the government to support international efforts to document and prosecute war crimes committed by ISIL, the Conservatives managed to be both dismissive and offensive at the same time:

“What is the point of providing humanitarian support to people who have been murdered by genocidal maniacs? I cannot even believe I am hearing this on the floor, but he talked about sending lawyers to interview rape victims.” - Jason Kenney, House of Commons, October 6th, 2014

Yesterday, they finally succumbed to logic and flip-flopped on their position, announcing that Canada will provide $1.2-million over one-year to support “accountability and transitional justice activities” for ongoing war-crimes investigations in the region.

This support is critically important. It’s just too bad the Conservatives wasted seven months playing political games and attacking the NDP instead of taking action against war crimes.

Canadians deserve better.
