NDP react to investigation by into Rogers' proposed acquisition of Shaw by the Competition Bureau

The NDP's Critic for Telecommunications, Brian Masse, made the following statement:

“I am glad to see the Competition Bureau will be investigating the proposed merger between Rogers and Shaw and the negative impacts it could have on Canadians. Now, more than ever before, reliable and affordable internet service is an essential service for all Canadians.

For decades Liberals and Conservatives have sided with the telecom giants, which has reduced competition and led skyrocketing prices that many Canadians simply cannot afford. Big telecom companies are gouging Canadians and continuing to make massive profits in a time where most families are struggling to get by. A merger between two of Canada’s biggest providers will undoubtedly make it worse.

The Liberal government must act to enforce price caps and promote real competition, instead of protecting the profits of telecoms giants.

New Democrats will continue to fight to lower cell and internet costs – so Canadians can get better access at better prices and have a more affordable life.”
