NDP presses Environment Committee to refocus its priorities

Canadians are demanding of their government an economy that is at once growing and sustainable. The NDP is therefore asking the Environment Committee to prioritize studies on the role of a protected and healthy environment within a growing economy.

“Canadians are rightfully concerned that climate change threatens both our environment and our economy” said NDP Environment critic Megan Leslie (Halifax). “The Environment Committee is derelict in its duty when it ignores these legitimate concerns.”

The Committee’s next meeting will welcome the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development, in order to study “licensed hunting and trapping in Canada”. Meanwhile, the NDP has submitted over a dozen motions to the committee on the polluter-pay principle, the impact of a federal price on carbon, and the effect of climate change on Canadian infrastructure.

“Canadians can trust Tom Mulcair’s NDP to grow the economy while protecting the environment. The inaction of this government has lasted long enough” said NDP deputy critic for the Environment François Choquette (Drummond).

The full list of motions is available upon request.
