NDP outlines top priorities for new session

OTTAWA – Following their caucus strategy session, New Democrat MPs laid out their priorities for the upcoming parliamentary session, including holding the Liberal government to account on their recent ethic scandals and fighting for a Canada that works for everyone, not just the wealthy and the well-connected.

“Instead of putting Canadians first, the Liberals’ priority seems to be helping themselves.” said NDP Leader Tom Mulcair. “Whether it’s cash for access, exclusive vacations on private islands or changing Canada’s voting system, the Liberals are showing that they are in it for themselves.”

Since the Liberals were elected, not a single full time job has been created, they have used a divide and conquer approach on funding for healthcare, and on the anniversary of the Human Rights Tribunal, it is clear the Liberals have failed in living up to their obligations on the rights of Indigenous Peoples. In the upcoming session, New Democrats will be focused on creating good paying jobs, defending and improving the public healthcare system, and standing up for the rights of Indigenous Peoples.

“Canadians voted for an end to Stephen Harper’s policies, but instead the Liberals went ahead with the Conservative approach to health care and the environment,” said Mulcair. “We’re standing up for equality, the rights of Indigenous Peoples, to protect our public healthcare system, and for meaningful action on climate change. Only New Democrats are focused on building a fair economy that lifts everyone up, not just the few at the top.”
