NDP MP Jasbir Sandhu attends Sikh funerals in Oak Creek, WI

OAK CREEK, WI – In solidarity and support with the Sikh community in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, NDP MP Jasbir Sandhu (Surrey North) attended the funerals for the victims of the shooting at the local Gurduara.

“This senseless tragedy struck a nerve with Canadians, especially in my family,” said Sandhu. “I wanted to come and grieve with the community, show my support and remind the people of Oak Creek that Canadians are standing in unity with them.”

Sandhu’s relatives were traveling to the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin on that fateful Sunday morning, but thankfully arrived late and missed the shooting. Sandhu also represents a riding with one of the largest Sikh populations in Canada.

“Everyone is struggling to understand how this could have happened,” said Sandhu. “Vigils and memorials have organically been happening across Canada and around the world and the message have been consistent–we will not tolerate hate and we will find hope in this tragedy.”

Today’s funeral is for the six Sikh victims: Paramjit Kaur, Suveg Singh, Sita Singh, Ranjit Singh, Satwant Singh Kaleka and Prakash Singh.
