NDP to introduce PMB to repeal bill C-51

OTTAWA – The NDP Public Safety Critic Randall Garrison (Esquimalt – Saanich – Sooke) will introduce a Private Members Bill to repeal C-51, the dangerous and ineffective legislation rushed through Parliament by the former Conservative government and supported by the Liberal Party.

“Canadians have been overwhelmingly vocal in their opposition to Bill C-51,” said Garrison during a press conference in Ottawa. “Experts from across the country all agree that the legislation infringes greatly on the rights of Canadians and provide little additional tools to keep our communities safe."

"New Democrats promised to make repealing Bill C-51 a priority and, as the Progressive Opposition, that is exactly what we intend to do,” said Garrison. “As Parliamentarians, it is our job to enact effective legislation to protect our communities while equally defending the rights and freedoms of our democratic society. We can and must do both."

Justin Trudeau’s Liberals support the bill despite the facts presented at Committee and despite overwhelming opposition from Canadians. The Liberals instead have talked about the need for increased oversight and other changes to legislation but after eight months in office they have yet to deliver on any of these promises.

The private member’s bill will be introduced in the House of Commons at the earliest availability once Parliament resumes in the Fall.
