NDP demands full investigation to uncover KPMG affair

OTTAWA – After the shocking revelations made by the Enquête/Fifth Estate television teams, NDP Revenue and Finance critics Pierre-Luc Dusseault and Alexandre Boulerice are calling on the Liberal government to launch a full investigation into the KPMG debacle and the role of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

“CRA official refused to provide answers to the very important questions surrounding this tax-cheat scheme and so far the government has done nothing but protect KPMG and all those who benefited from this scheme,” said Pierre-Luc Dusseault (Sherbrooke). “The Liberal government must conduct a thorough investigation into this scheme and commit to ending these secret, penalty-free amnesty deals for tax evaders.”

The NDP has proposed a motion that will be voted on next week, which aims to push the government to recoup tens of billions of dollars lost annually to tax loopholes, deductions, and exemptions. The NDP motion specifically includes closing loopholes, ending amnesty deals granted to those committing fraud and fix tax treaties that let companies repatriate profits from tax havens to Canada tax-free, all of which currently benefit the wealthy thanks to Liberal inaction.

“The KPMG situation and the revelations made by these reports undermine the public’s confidence in our institutions,” said Alexandre Boulerice (Rosemont – La Petite Patrie). “The Liberal government must come clean and reveal all the details of this deal and others like it. Our economy should work for everyone, not just for the few at the top.”
