NDP demands Conservatives condemn repressive Ukrainian law

The NDP is demanding that the Canadian government reject and condemn today's ratification of repressive measures in Ukraine.

"These new rules will significantly curtail freedom of association and freedom of speech," said NDP Foreign Affairs critic Paul Dewar (Ottawa Centre).

The measures passed yesterday by the Ukrainian parliament, and approved today by the Ukrainian president, will also restrict the freedom of media and civil society organizations.

"These measures are unacceptable in a democracy," added Dewar. "The Conservatives must join New Democrats in supporting the democratic aspirations of the Ukrainian people, and voice their opposition to the new laws at the highest levels."
