NDP continues campaign to end pay-to-pay fee rip-off

TORONTO – Nearly ten thousand Canadians have already signed-on to the NDP campaign to eliminate charges for receiving monthly bills in the mail. The campaign is in response to a two dollar fee introduced by many telephone, TV, internet, and banking companies, for the bills Canadians receive in the mail if they haven't switched to online billing.

"Forcing Canadians to pay just so they can find out how much they have to pay is a clear rip-off,” said New Democrat MP Andrew Cash. “These fees penalize primarily seniors and families who are already struggling to pay their bills."

Last week, Cash submitted a motion calling on the federal government to take action to prohibit these fees across the board and, in response to increased pressure, the CRTC wrote to phone companies urging them to abandon these pay-to-pay fees.

“Providing incentives to choose paperless billing is one thing,” said Cash. “But allowing big companies to gouge the most vulnerable Canadians is completely unacceptable.”
