NDP congratulates Olympic flag-bearer Simon Whitfield

OTTAWA — The NDP congratulated triathlete Simon Whitfield today for being chosen as Canada’s flag-bearer for the opening ceremonies at the London Olympics.

“On behalf of New Democrats, I would like to congratulate him for this well deserved honour,” said Matthew Dubé (Chambly‒Borduas), Official Opposition critic for Sports. “Simon has demonstrated both his great skill as a triathlete as well as his fierce determination as a competitor. His performances have dazzled people across the country.”

The 37-year-old Whitfield is an accomplished athlete who won a gold medal at the Sydney Olympics Games and then a silver medal in Beijing four years ago. Born in Ontario and a current resident of British Columbia, all Canadians will be cheering him on as he carries Canada’s colours in London.

Dubé also took the opportunity, on behalf of the New Democrats, to wish all our athletes success at the London Games.

“The eyes of millions will be glued to the TV, watching our athletes perform over the next few weeks,” said Dubé. “Our Olympic athletes are a huge source of inspiration and we wish them all the best.”
