NDP CAUCUS OUTLINE TOP PRIORITIES FOR FALL SESSION

MONTREAL – Following their fall strategy meeting, New Democrat MPs laid out their plan to hold the Liberal government to account during the upcoming parliamentary session.

“There is a lot of work to be done,” said NDP Leader Tom Mulcair. “We must propose concrete solutions to improve the lives of Canadians as well as ensure the Liberal government is held to account.”

NDP MPs spent the summer listening to Canadians and identified democratic reform, defending public health care, protection of the environment, and human rights at home and the pursuit of peace abroad, as key priorities ahead of Parliament’s return next week.

“Town halls held by NDP MPs across the country confirmed that the time has come to adopt a system that makes every vote count,” said Mulcair. “We will hold the government to its promise of making 2015 the last election held under current, unfair voting system.”

On the issues of healthcare and climate change, the Liberal government has recently announced that it will continue abiding by Stephen Harper’s failed approach.

“As we return from the summer, Canadians are going to be increasingly surprised to see the Liberals embrace the same policies they rejected in the last election,” said NDP Caucus Chair, Charlie Angus. “Canadians want a strong NDP to keep the government true to their word, and that’s exactly what we’ll do.”
