NDP calls for calm in Thailand

New Democrats are concerned about the recent escalation of protests in Thailand. At least four people have died during more than a week of political unrest.

“The recent decision of the government to open barricades and end police confrontations with protesters is encouraging, and opens the door for reconciliation,” said NDP Foreign Affairs Critic Paul Dewar. “However, I was saddened to see previously peaceful demonstrations escalate into violence.”

At the peak of the latest wave of protests, more than 100,000 people marched in the streets of Bangkok. More recent protests have been smaller in number but marked with increased aggression.

“New Democrats stand in solidarity with the democratic aspirations of the Thai people, and recognize their desire for transparent and accountable civilian government,” added Dewar. “We call on the Canadian government to urge all sides to avoid violence, exercise restraint, and work towards a peaceful settlement of the political conflict.”
