NDP Calls for Balanced Gender Representation on Crown Corporations

Today, Sheila Malcolmson, MP for Nanaimo-Ladysmith and NDP Critic for Status of Women, introduced a Bill to require gender balance on Crown corporation boards of directors.

"Women are still under-represented within our country's decision-making bodies, so the NDP is proposing concrete action to ensure equal representation of women and men on federal boards," Malcolmson said.

The most recent data shows that women make up only 27% of the members on boards of directors on Crown Corporations, agencies, and commissions across the country.

“With the adoption of the NDP's Pay Equity motion in Parliament earlier this month, we are optimistic that we can now take the next step,” said Malcolmson. “It’s time to pass progressive legislation that reduces inequality and evens the playing field between women and men."
