NDP blocked from introducing motion on Islamophobia

Today, Conservative MPs blocked the introduction of a motion denouncing islamophobia by the NDP.

“There is really no excuse to block an attempt to have Parliament denounce islamophobia in all its forms,” said NDP Leader Tom Mulcair, following the attempt to receive unanimous consent for the motion in the House of Commons. “We must actively fight hate perpetrated against the Muslim community. Just as we must stand against hate perpetrated against any group of people on the basis of their religion, race, sexual orientation or gender identity.”

A non-partisan online petition calling on the government to denounce islamophobia has received close to 70 thousand signatures.

“The Parliament of Canada must do everything it can to denounce hate and promote multiculturalism. We are disappointed that we were prevented from doing so today,” said NDP Critic for Multiculturalism Rachel Blaney.
