Mulcair urges Harper to help free Fahmy

NDP leader Tom Mulcair has written a second letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper urging him to personally intervene to help secure the release of Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy, who has been imprisoned in Egypt for over a year.

“Quite simply, being a journalist is not a crime. Canada needs to send a strong message to the Government of Egypt of the need to respect basic human rights, including freedom of the press,” wrote Mulcair.

Mr. Mulcair noted that former Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird spoke of Mr. Fahmy’s imminent release last week, but Egyptian authorities have instead ordered a new trial on charges that have been roundly condemned by the international community.
