More job losses under the Conservatives

New figures from Statistics Canada show the Conservatives’ unbalanced economic approach continues to hit Canadian families hard.

The Canadian economy finished 2014 by shedding an additional 4,300 jobs last month, following significant losses in November.

“Nearly 1.3 million Canadians are looking for work. And yet while employment continues to drop, Conservatives are focussed on handouts to wealthy families instead of creating jobs,” said NDP Finance Critic Nathan Cullen (Skeena-Bulkley Valley). “Canadians, and especially middle class families, can see how the ideological approach of the Harper Conservatives is taking Canada in the wrong direction.”

In contrast to Canada’s faltering numbers, the American labour market continued to show strong growth, with 2014 employment growth in the US nearly doubling Canada’s. Meanwhile, the jobs crisis facing young people continues to worsen – with 3,300 more youth jobs lost in December.

“Our government faces important economic choices in 2015 and it’s time Stephen Harper finally started listening to Canadian families,” said Cullen. “Tom Mulcair’s NDP understands the challenges families are facing and are proposing practical ideas to help families and repair the Conservative damage.”
