Liberals refuse to take immediate action to reduce poverty

OTTAWA - New Democrat MP Brigitte Sansoucy (Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot) is deeply disappointed with the government's decision to vote down her proposed legislation to reduce poverty in Canada.

"The Liberal party has committed to putting in place a national poverty reduction strategy, yet they voted against a bill that would have done just that. They promised to take concrete action on this important issue and are now refusing to even consider the contributions of others in this process. Once again, we see that this Government’s actions do not match their words," said Sansoucy.

It’s important to note that 3 million Canadians live in poverty, of which over 1.3 million are children, yet the Liberals have refused to support legislation that would have effectively fought poverty.

"This bill offered innovative measures to help the Liberals fulfill their commitment and take concrete actions to remedy this unacceptable situation," added Sansoucy. “Unfortunately, the Government's decision will delay action that would effectively fight poverty in Canada."
