LIBERALS MUST RESTORE CONFIDENCE IN NEB PROCESS

MONTREAL – NDP Leader Tom Mulcair is calling on the Minister for Natural Resources, Jim Carr, to restore confidence in the National Energy Board (NEB) by replacing the commissioners conducting hearings on the Energy East Pipeline and finally fixing the environmental review process for development projects.

“Canadians can't have confidence in the outcome of the hearing if there isn't a high level of trust in the process,” said Mulcair. “Minister Carr has done nothing to assure Canadians of the integrity of the process, even after concerns were raised about inappropriate lobbying.”

The NDP recently called on the Lobbying Commissioner to investigate reports of meetings place between Jean Charest, who is working for TransCanada, and top representatives of the NEB to discuss the TransCanada Energy East pipeline even though Charest was not registered as a lobbyist.

“Justin Trudeau and the Liberals committed to fixing the environmental review process and yet development projects continue to be reviewed under Stephen Harper’s flawed process,” said the NDP Leader. “With all these valid concerns and secret meetings surrounding the current process, the Minister should act immediately to restore the integrity of the NEB and replace the commissioners who were appointed by Stephen Harper.
