Liberals must make Canadian jobs clear priority in relationship with Trump administration

NDP Trade Critic, Tracey Ramsey, made the following statement regarding the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA):

“On the eve of President-Elect Trump’s inauguration, concern is growing amongst Canadians in response to the Liberals’ silence on the issue of tearing up or renegotiating NAFTA.

Media reports that Brian Mulroney is discussing the trade deal with American billionaire investor Wilbur Ross on behalf of the Canadian government increases concerns that ordinary Canadians are once again being left out of this process. While these talks happen behind closed doors, the government has still not indicated what its priorities are for the renegotiation of the deal.

There are millions of Canadian jobs at stake but Canadians are being left in the dark only to learn about negotiations through media leaks. The government is letting millionaires and billionaires make backroom decisions that will have a significant impact on Canadians’ lives.

Protecting and growing good-paying Canadian jobs is the NDP’s number one priority. It is now time for the government to come clean to Canadians about their priorities.”
