Liberals must build fair economy for all Canadians: NDP

OTTAWA – Today, New Democrats announced the measures that should be included in the Liberal government’s upcoming 2017 federal budget. The NDP sent a letter to the Finance Minister earlier this week detailing the measures needed to work towards building a fair economy.

“The choices the Liberals make will decide which Canadians get ahead, and which are left behind,” said the NDP’s Finance Critic Alexandre Boulerice. “Successive governments have passed budgets that largely put the interests of powerful insiders and big corporations ahead of the needs of hardworking Canadians. To date, Liberal budgets have largely done the same, but we can do better moving forward.”

The NDP has sent a letter to the Minister of Finance outlining the following four measures that should be included in the budget:

  • Tax fairness and infrastructure investment
  • Good jobs
  • Closing the gap for Indigenous Peoples living in Canada
  • Strengthening our public healthcare
“There are a powerful and wealthy few at the top of our economy that would like for the Liberal government to focus on their private interests and not on the needs of everyday Canadians,” added Boulerice. “The solution is to have a government that puts Canadians ahead of these wealthy and well-connected insiders.”

New Democrats are hopeful the Liberal government’s 2017 budget is focused on building a fair economy that lifts everyone up, not just the few at the top.
