The Liberal Party on European Trade: “At some point though we need to see what it is we’re actually supporting”

Remember when Chrystia Freeland was going to provide policy heft to her leader’s thin background on important issue like trade and the economy?

Well today, Liberal International Trade critic Chrystia Freeland said of the free trade deal with Europe: “We have been supportive of the deal from the start.”

After declaring her complete support, Freeland actually went on to add: “At some point though we need to see what it is we’re actually supporting.”

And while she continues to be Justin Trudeau’s spokesperson on trade, Freeland has yet to attend a single meeting of the all-party Standing Committee on International Trade.

In the future, might we suggest the Liberals follow the NDP’s thoughtful and responsible approach to this deal: wait to see the final text public before endorsing Stephen Harper’s trade plans.
