Jagmeet Singh names Karine Trudel as Deputy Critic for International Trade

SAGUENAY – Following his visit to the Rio Tinto Alcan aluminium smelter, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh announced that local MP Karine Trudel (Jonquière) will be the party’s new International Trade Deputy Critic. Given the devastating impact of new lumber and aluminium tariffs on local communities, the NDP wants to ensure that the region’s interests are defended in Ottawa.

“I’m very proud to announce that Karine Trudel will be taking on increasing responsibility within our caucus,” said Singh. “Karine has always vigorously defended the interests of her local community, particularly when it comes to softwood lumber and the protection of supply chain management. I’m so pleased that this new role will provide her with a greater platform to amplify those efforts.”

Elected in 2015, Trudel is currently the party’s labour critic. Occupying both roles means the industries that power Quebec’s economy will be have an even stronger voice in Ottawa. She will support the NDP’s lead trade critic Tracey Ramsey, who is also deputy critic for labour. Ramsey has done excellent work in holding the government to account on various trade files, including NAFTA and the CPTPP. Together they will hold the government to account on fair trade that includes the interests of working people.

“It is an honour for me to be named as the party’s Deputy Critic for International Trade,” said Trudel. “My new responsibilities will allow me to be an even more effective voice when it comes to defending the interests of my constituents and of Quebec’s industries – both of which are under threat from current trade talks.”
