Harper must help secure release of Canadian journalist held in Egypt

Official Opposition Leader Tom Mulcair wrote to Prime Minister Stephen Harper today urging him to call on the Egyptian government to release Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy and his colleagues.

“I would ask that you also intervene in this case, and work with our allies to secure the release of Mohamed Fahmy and his colleagues. Canada needs to send a strong message to the Government of Egypt to respect human rights and defend freedom of expression,” wrote Mr. Mulcair.

The NDP has repeatedly pressed the Conservatives to help liberate Mr. Fahmy, who has been in an Egyptian jail since December 2013. While the United Nations and U.S. President Barack Obama have called for the release of all journalists captured at the same time, the Canadian government has so far refused to do the same.
