Don’t cut veterans’ support: NDP to Conservatives

New Democrat motion calls for protection of veterans in budget

OTTAWA – New Democrats today urged the Conservatives to shield Veterans Affairs Canada from their budget chopping block. In a motion to be voted tomorrow evening, New Democrats are calling for all-party support to ensure that programs and services to all military and RCMP veterans are protected.

“Our RCMP and military veterans dedicated their entire lives to serving Canadians. The least the Conservatives can do is support them by saving Veterans Affairs from funding cuts in the next budget,” said Peter Stoffer, New Democrat critic for Veterans Affairs. “We’ll be watching out for this when the budget is released.”

“New Democrats won’t stop the pressure on the Conservatives. We support the men and women who have valiantly served us and we want to send a clear message that axing their funding is downright wrong,” said the NDP Deputy Veterans Affairs Critic Annick Papillon. “That’s why we’re calling for all other parties to support our motion.”

The motion calls on the government to honour the service of Canadian military and RCMP veterans and their families by committing to not cut Veterans Affairs Canada in the upcoming budget and to provide programs and services to all military and RCMP veterans and their families in a timely and comprehensive manner.
