DIAFILTRED MILK PROTEINS: LIBERALS STILL MISSING IN ACTION

JONQUIÈRE –The NDP is joining the hundreds of dairy farmers who protested at the Liberal Caucus meeting in calling out the Liberal government for the lack of movement on the diafiltered milk proteins file. Affected family farms are losing an average of $1,000 per week due to Liberal inaction.

"The Liberals say they value this region, but they ignore family farmers who are being hit hard,” said NDP MP Karine Trudel (Jonquière).
"The government says ‘trust us’ but trust is earned and right now they are failing milk producers.”

Canadian Dairy Producers suffered lossesof $220 million in 2015 because of unrestricted imports of US diafiltered milk proteins. The industry consistently called for the problem to be resolved immediately, which could be done by the government enforcing already existing regulations regarding compositional standards for equivalent goods.

“The government should control the importation of US diafiltered milk proteins by enforcing existing regulations regarding compositional standards equivalent goods.” said the NDP Critic for Agriculture, Ruth Ellen Brosseau (Berthier-Maskinongé). “The Liberals say they support supply management but it’s clear this government lacks the political will to fix this situation and our producers are paying the price,” she added.
