Conservatives vote against protecting government resources

NDP Ethics critic Charlie Angus (Timmins – James Bay) made the following statement in reaction to the defeat of his motion on Conservative abuse of government Challenger jets for partisan activity:

The Conservatives have continually and deliberately misused government resources to serve their narrow partisan interests.

It was recently revealed that Conservative party officials were flying around on Challenger jets intended to be used exclusively for government business or to transport the Prime Minister and his family.

By abusing public resources for the personal use of the Conservative party or its friends, the Conservatives have embraced with singular relish, actions they used to rail against in the old Liberal regime.

Canadians deserve better.

New Democrats introduced an opposition day motion to establish clear rules to limit the use of government Challenger jets. Conservative bagmen and buddies have no business getting free and cheap flights on the taxpayers’ dime.

We had hoped that the Conservatives would support this practical motion but unfortunately they’d rather look out for their friends.

While Conservatives have forgotten their promise to be accountable to Canadians, New Democrats will continue to hold them to account for their abuse of the public trust.
