Since forming government in 2006, the Conservatives have spent over half a billion dollars on advertising – an amount Treasury Board President Tony Clement calls “essential”.
While they have been funding ‘essential’ TV advertising, they have cut away at services that really are essential, like their heartless cuts to Employment Insurance:
- Reduction of Service Canada staff leading to 24 per cent of Employment Assistance applicants waiting longer than a month for benefits.
- Cutting Service Canada offices dealing with Employment Insurance and other benefits from 120 to 20.
- Changing Employment Insurance so recipients are required to travel farther and accept less for work.
These ‘essential’ advertisements on the ‘Economic Action Plan’ and ‘responsible resource development’ are just more examples of Conservatives putting their propaganda needs ahead of helping Canadians when they need it.
Canadians deserve better.
