Conservatives talk out of both sides of their mouth on public safety

The NDP denounces the Conservatives’ hypocrisy on public safety. While they continue to talk about the importance of victims’ rights, the Conservative government is about to slash in half funding for an important victimization prevention program.

The government chose to not renew all Canadian funding for Circles of Support and Accountability (CoSA). That means, starting today, many CoSAs across the country face the threat of closure, despite having proven to be effective in protecting our children and making our communities safer.

“Sexual offences are devastating crimes, and must be taken seriously. The Conservatives should be doing more, not less, to prevent them,” said NDP Public Safety critic, Randall Garrison (Esquimalt—Juan de Fuca).

This is just another example of the Conservatives’ “tough on crime” agenda: talking big game while financially crippling preventive programs that work.

“A responsible government is one that avoids playing politics by supporting effective programs that ensure the public’s safety. Stephen Harper should put his money where his mouth is and ensure that this program continues,” concluded deputy Public Safety critic, Rosane Doré-Lefebvre (Alfred—Pellan).
