Conservatives still failing on the environment

Lack of federal leadership costly to Canada’s environment and economy

OTTAWA – An Environment Canada report released today confirms that the Conservatives are failing to take action to meet even their own goals for greenhouse gas emission reductions. The report notes that the federal government played almost no role in bringing the country closer to the 2020 goals.

“There’s nothing in this report for the Conservatives to brag about,” said NDP Environment Critic Megan Leslie (Halifax). “Over one-third of the reduction is simply an accounting change. And most of the actual progress is the result of provincial and territorial leadership and the fact that we’ve been in a recession. The Conservatives can’t claim any credit – except maybe for their economic mismanagement.”

“This report doesn’t bode well for Canada’s economic recovery either,” said Deputy Environment Critic Anne Minh-Thu Quach (Beauharnois—Salaberry). “The rest of the world is taking note of the Conservatives’ inaction on the environment. Important economic partners like Europe and the US are already closing their doors to countries like Canada who have no plan to deal with greenhouse gases.”
