Conservatives misled Canadians on CPP/QPP

NDP Pensions critic Murray Rankin (Victoria) has asked the Speaker to investigate whether Conservative MP Kevin Sorenson deliberately misled Parliament during debate on an NDP motion to expand the Canada and Quebec Pension Plans (CPP/QPP).

“It is irresponsible for the Conservatives to manipulate the facts around CPP and QPP, especially since this country is facing a retirement crisis,” said Rankin. “New Democrats are working to ensure that Canadians can retire in dignity, but the Conservatives are more interested in protecting their ideology.”

The NDP is proposing phased-in increases to basic CPP/QPP benefits. Experts agree that this is the most effective way to help ensure retirement security for all Canadians.

Sorenson falsely claimed that the Department of Finance had warned that the NDP plan to increase the CPP/QPP would kill jobs across Canada. However, recently-released Access to Information documents reveal that the Finance department concluded that expanding the CPP/QPP would bring long-term economic benefits and higher income for seniors.
