Conservatives cut more services to Canadians

OTTAWA – The latest round of Conservative service cuts could have dire consequences for Canadians, New Democrats warned today.

“Conservatives are cutting key departments that provide services the public rely on every day,” said Official Opposition Treasury Board critic Mathieu Ravignat (Pontiac). “Meanwhile, they’re handing out huge tax cuts and other subsidies to their good friends in industry and making Canadians pay.”

At least 1,660 public service employees and professionals learned today that their positions could be on the chopping block. These public servants support essential federal programs – including Service Canada. For example, nurses responsible for determining the eligibility of applicants for disability benefits under the Pension Act could lose their jobs.

“This is the latest Conservative attack against services Canadians rely on,” said Nycole Turmel (Hull-Aylmer). “The Conservatives claim to be champions of the economy, but they’re cutting good jobs, leaving thousands of families in dire straits and hurting local economies.”
