Conservatives are against appointments, except when they’re for it

In the House of Commons Friday, Conservative MP Paul Calandra made an astounding statement:

“We’ve been very clear since we’ve been elected to this place, that we don’t want to appoint Senators”

-Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister Paul Calandra, October 25, 2013

This will come as a surprise to most Canadians, including Mike Duffy, Patrick Brazeau, Pamela Wallin, Irving Gerstein, Leo Housakos, Donald Plett, Claude Carignan, Carolyn Stewart Olsen, Fabian Manning, Larry Smith, Josée Verner and the 46 other people appointed to the Senate by Stephen Harper.

The Conservatives should face the facts: they are the ones responsible for the mess in the Senate right now. They are the ones who turned their backs on their own principles to give dozens of their well-connected friends cushy jobs for life.

Canadians deserve better.
