Canadian women working for free for the rest of the year

Sheila Malcolmson, NDP Critic for the Status of Women, made the following statement:

As of tomorrow, women in Canada will be effectively working for free for the rest of the year.

Even in 2017, Canadian women are still making 74 cents to every dollar Canadian men earn. If that gap were spread out over a calendar year, then, beginning Friday, September 22, women would go the rest of the year without any income at all.

That same "no-pay" date already passed for women of colour, even earlier for women with disabilities, and Indigenous women have been effectively working for free since June 4^th.

Women shouldn’t have to wait for equality and yet, it has been thirteen years since the Pay Equity Task Force recommended the immediate implementation of pay equity legislation.

But the Trudeau government says it won`t legislate equal pay for work of equal value until closer to the next election.

So still we wait.

What will it take for the Liberal government to finally take action and legislate pay equity? Would we have more luck if we convinced a white male American celebrity to make our case directly to the Prime Minister?
